A contemporary farmhouse kitchen with a fabulous feature island. In this kitchen the island really does all the work as worktop space is limited elsewhere. The clever L-shape design makes full use of this unusually shaped kitchen and houses the sink, dishwashers, wine fridge and general storage, as well as two bar seating areas. The client wanted to delineate the bar seating areas with a contrast stone which works perfectly and introduces some interesting circular forms, while the oak supports here nicely echo the oak doors within the house as a whole and add some warmth to this contemporary space. We also introduced a curve where the island turns the corner to soften the lines of the island and ease the flow of traffic in this area. The client chose stone plinths to match the main worktops which is a clever way to disguise any scuff marks at floor level, and makes cleaning at this level very straightforward. A full height stone splashback behind the AGA matching the main worktops is a fantastic feature allowing the granite to be shown in all its glory. Full height units around the fridge create a valuable storage wall with glazed display cabinets, lit beautifully with integrated cabinet lighting. Other bespoke features include a dog bed cleverly incorporated into the bench seating in front of the large sash windows, and spice storage within one of the oak dovetail drawers.
